Aim of Ayurveda

प्रयोजनम् च अस्य स्वस्थस्य स्वास्थ्यरक्षणम् आतुरस्य विकारप्रशमनम् च । चरक सूत्रस्थान ३०/२६

Any science needs to have a clear aim. As per this Sutra, the Aim of Ayurveda is

  • Maintain the Health of the Healthy and
  • Treat the diseases of the Unhealthy

Often people have a misconception that Ayurveda is only for maintaining good health and not for treating disease.

Prime goal of an individual should be to maintain the health, so that we don’t get sick and suffer. However often, we don’t know what to do to keep the health. In this information age, there are so many conflicting opinions on how to maintain health and keeps changing often that we seem to be confused. There are so many diets, different recommendations for water consumption, how many times to eat …. we get a different answers from different experts.

Ayurveda has clearly mentioned what to be done on a regular basis – both daily and seasonal to maintain the health and balance the effect of nature on us.

Similarly Ayurveda has done extensive research on how to gain back the health of unhealthy. Every individual is different and hence the treatment often varies as the causative factor contributing to the current condition varies.

Samprapti – Roadmap of Vyadhi ( Disease )

Samprapti in Ayurveda provides the insight into how the Vyadhi ( disease ) happens and what are the affected Dosa, Dhatu, Mala etc.

Vaghbhatt specially fancies writing this in poetic form and so it is easy to visualize. Also, so much is said in so little words, that i am often awe struck.

For example, lets take the Swas Vyadhi ( Difficulty in Breathing …sometimes compared with Asthama ,… but don’t go by that ) … the samprapti says

Only 3 line and we kind of know the insight . Also, if we know this than chikitsya becomes easy and we can quickly select whole range of Remedies from Ahar ( food ), Vihar ( Lifestyle ) and Dravyas ( both found in kitchen and otherwise ) to control and manage this.

Please forgive if any mistakes, but here is my understaning

1st line – Vayu is obstructed by Kapha or in other words the functions of air like Breathing is is obstructed

2nd line – It impacts Pran ( life ), Anna ( Food ), Ambu ( Water ) channels in the body

3rd line – It resides in the Chest ( ura ) region but starts in the stomach

Now lets talk in some basic language

Kapha ( combination of heavy elements like Earth and Water ) is obstructed in the chest region which disturbs the life

So what we need to do — Break the obstruction of this Kapha … actually before that stop the causative factors that might lead to this. Stop consuming cold, heavy food and liquids and apply some tricks to break the accumulation of current kapha. Breaking can be done by Teekshna ( that breaks bonds, usually of type Salt and Pepper taste )  property herbs

Honey Water

This is a very good preparation that can help in loosing weight. Please take only if advised by a knowledgeable practitioner.

It should be taken early morning ideally as replacement for breakfast or with little breakfast

  1. Take 800 ml of Water in a pan
  2. Heat it in medium flame
  3. Let it boil and evaporate till only 100 ml remains
  4. Let it sit and cool down completely
  5. Mix 25 grams of Honey in this 100 ml of water
  6. Drink this

Points To Note

  • As per Ayurveda, Honey should NEVER be mixed with Hot Water.
  • For best results, Try to get Raw Organic Unfiltered local Honey

  • Honey cures cold symptoms as it is hot in nature. TRUTH is honey cures cold by being dry in nature and hence soaks all the water element associated with cold and by breaking the cold accumulation and cleans the body with its vacuum like action

Takra or Chaas or Buttermilk has lot of health benefits as per Ayurveda. It is –

  • Light to digest
  • Improves Digestion
  • Cures diseases of Kapha and Vata
  • Helpful in following diseases – Swelling, Udara, Piles, Grahani ( food particles are seen in stool ), Spleen, Artificial poisoning, Anemia etc.

This is how it can be prepared at home –

  • Take 2 cup of yogurt ( dahi )
  • Mix 2 cup of water in it
  • Churn it very well. We recommend old fashioned hand churner. This is made of wood or metal ( Please see the picture . This is because the churning action should be both clockwise and anti-clockwise. Hence a mixer is not recommended
  • Froth will gather at top
  • Remove the froth
  • Take the liquid left over
  • Add Salt ( Himalayan Rock Salt preferred ) to taste
  • Add other digestive herbs like Hingu, Jeera, Ajwain etc. to taste
  • Drink to your good health

Points to Note

  • Just adding water to Curd/Yogurt is not Butter Milk at all. Please avoid this
  • Prepare Fresh every day. Don’t buy ready made or something kept overnight. Health is priceless and hence little effort is justified
